Preparation
- In a small saucepan, combine ½ cup of the granulated sugar with ½ cup of water. Place over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir gently until the sugar completely dissolves, which usually takes about 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool for about 2 minutes.
- Add the fresh cranberries to the warm syrup, stirring gently to ensure that each berry gets well-coated. Allow them to sit in the syrup for about 5 minutes.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the coated cranberries onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spread them into a single layer and let them dry for approximately 1 hour.
- Place the remaining ½ cup of granulated sugar in a shallow bowl or on a rimmed plate. Working in batches, roll the tacky cranberries in the sugar until they are evenly coated. Return the coated cranberries to the parchment paper and let them dry at room temperature for about 1 hour more.
Storage
- Once completely dry, store the Sugared Cranberries uncovered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Notes
Use fresh cranberries that are firm and bright. Consider infusing the syrup with flavors like vanilla bean, rosemary, or orange zest. Adjust sugar to your taste.
