Main Ingredients

  • 1-2 cups cornstarch (to coat chicken) This key ingredient creates a crispy coating that gives the chicken a satisfying crunch.
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) Used for frying the chicken, this oil will transform it into a golden, crispy delight.
  • 3 Tablespoons soy sauce This savory ingredient brings umami depth to the dish.
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil Adds richness, giving the dish a nutty aroma.
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth Infuses moisture and flavor into each bite.
  • 5 Tablespoons honey Sweet and sticky, honey balances the heat.
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced Amplifies flavor, filling the kitchen with an irresistible scent.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger Adds warmth and depth.
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper Brings a mild heat and subtle flavor.
  • 1/2-1 teaspoon crushed red pepper Optional; provides an extra punch of heat.
  • Green onions for garnish Adds a fresh crunch and a pop of color.

Method

Preparation
  1. Coat the cut-up chicken pieces in cornstarch, ensuring each piece is well-covered for a crispy texture.
  2. Refrigerate the coated chicken for about 30 minutes to help the cornstarch adhere.
Sauce Preparation
  1. Mix the soy sauce, chicken broth, sesame oil, honey, minced garlic, ground ginger, and white and crushed red peppers in a small bowl until well-combined.
Cooking
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the chicken in small batches until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. Drain excess oil and add the prepared sauce along with the fried chicken. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Serving
  1. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve the sticky chicken over a bed of fried rice.

Notes

For an even crispier finish, double fry the chicken. If you have leftovers, save the sauce separately to maintain crispiness.
