Method
Preparation
- Start by adding the granulated sugar, lemon juice, and zest to a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir gently as you heat the mixture, allowing the sugar to dissolve completely into a syrup.
Cooking
- Once the sugar is fully dissolved, add the fresh blueberries to the pan. Stir gently to coat the berries in the sweet syrup.
- Continue to cook the blueberry mixture over low heat for about 35 to 40 minutes, watching it bubble gently until it thickens and resembles the consistency of loose jam.
Cooling and Jarring
- After cooking, remove the saucepan from heat and let the jam cool for about 15 minutes before transferring it to jars.
- Carefully transfer the warm blueberry jam into two pint jars and seal them with tight-fitting lids to maintain freshness.
Storage
- Let the jars cool completely before storing in the refrigerator, where they will keep for up to two months.
Notes
Select firm, plump blueberries that are deep in color for the best flavor. Test consistency by placing a spoonful on a cold plate; if it holds its shape after cooling, it’s ready! Consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of vanilla for extra flavor.
