Method
Preparation
- In a large saucepan, add the peeled and cubed yams along with ground cinnamon, salt, and water.
Cooking
- Cover the saucepan and bring the contents to a simmer over medium heat. Once it starts simmering, reduce the heat to low.
- After 15 minutes, check to make sure there is still liquid at the bottom of the pan.
- If you notice the water has evaporated, add an additional 1/4 cup of water to prevent the yams from burning.
- Recover the pan and continue cooking the yams for another 5 minutes or until they are fork-tender.
Finishing Touches
- Once the yams are tender, remove the lid and allow them to sit for about 3 minutes.
- Add the butter and pepper to the yams. Using a potato masher, mash the yams until you reach a smooth and creamy consistency.
- If the mixture is too dry, add a splash of milk or milk alternative to achieve your desired creaminess.
Notes
For added flavor, consider incorporating a pinch of nutmeg or a bit of garlic powder while mashing the yams. If you enjoy a bit of sweetness, drizzle a bit of maple syrup or honey over the finished mash to enhance the dish further. Taste-test as you go, adjusting the salt and pepper to your liking.
