Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) and greased a 9-inch deep dish pie plate with butter.
- In a large sauté pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat.
- Add chopped shallots and cook gently until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes.
- Add broccoli florets, ¼ teaspoon of salt, and ⅓ cup of water. Cook until broccoli is tender and water evaporates, about 3-4 minutes, then set aside.
Mixing and Baking
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, remaining ¾ teaspoon of salt, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper.
- Spread the broccoli and shallot mixture in the greased pie plate, then sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese over it.
- Pour the egg and cream mixture over the cheese and vegetables.
- Bake in the oven for about 1 hour or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
- Let cool for about 10 minutes before slicing into wedges.
Notes
For enhanced flavor, try adding herbs like thyme or dill. You can replace Gruyère with cheddar or feta. Experiment with different vegetables for a unique twist!
