Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 5 pounds apples A mix of sweet and tart varieties, like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith.
  • 1.5 cups brown sugar Adds rich, caramel-like sweetness.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Enhances all the flavors.
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon Essential for a cozy flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds depth and sweetness.
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg Adds a warm holiday twist.

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and roughly dice the apples. Place the diced apples into a 6-quart or larger Crockpot.
Mixing Ingredients
  1. Add the brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the apples, ensuring they are evenly coated with the mixture.
Cooking
  1. Cover the Crockpot and set it to HIGH for 1 hour to kickstart the cooking process.
  2. After an hour, reduce the heat to LOW and let it cook for 10 hours. Stir the mixture every 1-2 hours to help the apples break down evenly.
  3. After 10 hours, stir in the vanilla extract and cook uncovered for 1 additional hour to cook off moisture.
  4. Blend to desired consistency using an immersion blender or a regular blender (be cautious with hot mixtures).
  5. Serve the apple butter and enjoy!

Notes

Mixing different types of apples adds complexity to the flavor. Adjust sweetness with more or less brown sugar or a splash of maple syrup for added flavor.
