  • 1.5 lbs ground spicy or sweet Italian sausage Brings a wonderful depth to the dish.
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced Adds a fragrant kick.
Sauce Base
  • 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes Forms the base of the sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavors.
  • 1.5 teaspoons sugar Balances the acidity.
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Provides a bit of heat.
Creamy Mixture
  • 1 cup heavy cream Makes the sauce luxuriously creamy.
  • ⅓ cup plus 3 tablespoons grated pecorino Romano cheese Enhances depth of flavor.
  • ⅓ cup chopped fresh basil Adds vibrancy to the dish.
Cheese Topping
  • 8 oz whole milk mozzarella cheese, shredded Creates a golden, bubbly topping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti noodles and cook according to package instructions until very al dente, about 7 minutes. Drain and return the pasta to the pot.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and position the rack in the middle.
Cooking the Sausage
  1. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Crumble the Italian sausage into the pan and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate, draining all but 1 tablespoon of the fat.
Creating the Sauce
  1. Add minced garlic to the pan and stir constantly for about 1 minute, until soft but not brown. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, salt, sugar, and crushed red pepper flakes, then simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
Combining Ingredients
  1. Stir in heavy cream, ⅓ cup of grated pecorino Romano, cooked sausage, and fresh basil until combined. Pour this mixture over the pasta, gently stirring to combine.
Layering the Bake
  1. Spoon half of the pasta mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking dish, sprinkle with half of the shredded mozzarella and remaining pecorino Romano cheese. Layer the rest of the pasta mixture on top, followed by the remaining mozzarella and pecorino.
Baking
  1. Transfer to the oven and bake uncovered until the cheese is melty and golden, about 15 to 20 minutes.
Finishing Touches
  1. Once baked, sprinkle with additional fresh basil and serve hot.

Notes

Consider adding sautéed veggies for added nutrition and flavor. For an extra golden crust, broil for a couple of minutes after baking.
